Writing About Writing (week of July 22)

They say if you want to be good at something you need to practice every day.  I started Writing About Writing as a way of keeping myself accountable for how much I was writing outside of my school work.  Everything counts.  Emails, journals, scripts, blogging, even excessive tweeting.
Over time this space has become a way of keeping track of weekly goals in other areas of my life as well as writing.  A statement of what I’ve done, and what I want to do.  A weekly record of my successes and failures, for better or for worse.

Last week was mostly about school work and more school work.  The class had a few tours earlier in the week and were able to do a soft pitch of our show/game/whatever.  It was good to be able to give it a try as that will be our entire existence this week.  I’m happy with the amount of journaling I did this week, and I happily got slowly return to my quiet times.  Yay!

My goal for this week is to give specialized pitches to each of the companies we’re pitching to.  I want to be sure to focus on an aspect of my IP that falls in line with what the company typically works on.  I think this will help me go in with my best possible option.

Anything I get to do beyond that is a bonus.  I’m hoping that part of that bonus will include a few blog posts, but we’ll see how that goes.  It might be a bit of a sparse week for the blog, but next week I should be back in full force.  In fact, I have a very long idea list for next week that I’m excited to dive into.

Last week things are finally started to normalize, and then life got crazy again.  On Tuesday a cable guy came and connected my internet connection.  I was so excited I nearly cried.  Then I spent nearly all my free time working on my next school project with was due on Thursday instead of Friday… because on Friday we went to Comic Con!

And that’s the root of all the crazy from last week.  Comic Con moved up a deadline, took up my entire Friday (not that I mind), and then I accidentally left my phone charger in my friends hotel.  So I’ve been sans-phone for about two days now.  Awesome.

This week may be my first normal week since I got to LA.  And it probably wont even seem normal yet.  I still have boxes that need unpacking and I still don’t have a reliable way to get around town.

Goals?  This week I need to work on a game deck (basically a slide show) and I have no idea how to do that.  So getting through that with minimal trauma and panic would be ideal.  I’d also like to read some and just try to be as organized as possible.

Last week felt so long.  Yes, I know that it couldn’t have possibly been more than however many hours are always in a week, but I was scheduled so tightly that it was exhausting.  My biggest goal for last week was to journal and quiet time.  Journaling absolutely happened, yay!  Quiet times did not, but I already think I’m in a better place for them next week.  Other than that was school stuff and networking.  So much networking.

As tiring as last week was, I’m excited for this week.  My school schedule for the week is looking good and includes a day at Comic Con.  You guys, I’m going to comic con!  *does happy dance*

The not-so-great news is that I’m catching up with the things I had scheduled for the blog.  I don’t even have this whole week planned out, and I still don’t have internet access at my apartment (there’s a guy coming tomorrow).  That makes one pretty high priority for this week blogging.  And comic con.  And quiet time.  And sleep.  Yeah, sleep would be good.

Whoa, talk about a serious dip in jounaling last week.  Only one entry for the entire week!  What is this?  Probably anarchy.  Other than that colossal failure (along with the failure to do quiet times for most of this week), I’m pretty happy with the other writing I’ve done.  Notes aren’t that intense of writing, but they are important, especially in this class.  I do wish there was more of a chance to talk to my classmates about our projects, but I suppose I’ll have to create that time.

As I’m sure is expected my goal for this week is journaling and quiet time.  I’ll say five days this week as a goal, but I’m not so secretly hoping for all seven.  Other than that, I need to do a little bit more blogging this week because I don’t have ALL of the rest of the month planned.

This Will Be: July 2013

Looking at my goals this month it seems that July will be very career and future focused. Which is exciting, but also a little intimidating. I hope that all this industry focus isn’t too overwhelming before I even begin. Though I suppose my anxieties can be saved for another time.

I started a new block of classes July 1, so I’m already on day two of the semester. This round is called Transmedia Development. When I’ve explained this to people I’ve mostly described transmedia as cross-platform development (developing stories that stretch over TV, social media, video games, ect). This month I’m going to learn how accurate that description is (or is not).

School in this city and industry means networking. I’ll be doing a lot of that this month, and I’m excited to see where it takes me. I’m unashamedly hoping that it gives me the opportunity to intern with a production company or media group I like. That’s goal number next, find a fall internship.

Of course, there will be a few non-school/industry things planned this month too. I’ve got the basics of my apartment down, but I would like to spend some time to make this new space more of a home. I’d also like to host some people for dinner or a movie night. I’m not sure what yet, but I love having people over and playing hostess.

After last month, I think it’s best I keep any vlog-making goals the same as last time. Since I will be focusing more on school, I want to be sure that the majority of my efforts are on my school work. So two videos. We’ll see how it goes.

Other than that? I will be headed to Comic Con for at least a day this month through my school and I’m wildly excited. I’m trying to determine what to cos-play as. Poison Ivy? Mrs. Reynolds from Firefly? (I’d have to cut my hair) I’d like to use my natural hair color, but if a character is red-headed, they’re usually all the way red, not halfsies like me. I know, first world problems.

There’s also a possibility that my mom and or sister will come down to LA to hang out with me for a weekend. I haven’t seen the sister since Christmas, so it would be awesome to see her, and fun to show off my new place. As complicated as my feelings are on this city, I’m starting to have favorite places that I’m simply itching to share with people.

What are your goals for the month?  Any wild plans for this craziness?

Apparently my goal for last week was note taking.  Ha!  Oh man, that’s laughable considering how many notes I’ve taken.  Pitiful really.  I was really glad to have things pretty well planned out blog-wise for the week though, even though I changed Thursday last minute (you’ll see the post I had scheduled next week).

My main goal this week is to get internet access, but perhaps I would get more done without.  Just being in this town has me itching to start again on a script, which is exciting since I haven’t even given a thought to any screen-based stories in over a month.  Perhaps revisiting my Spring semester spec or last Fall’s original?

Since I only have a week before classes start, I’d like to spend some time pre-writing and planning out my blog posts for July.  I want to be able to focus as single-mindedly as possible on school next month and having an arsenal of pre-written content would be a big help.

Also that last of the moving!  All in all I have a week before I am going to be returning to school.  Ideal world: I’m able to organize myself to ship my things from Chicago before I start school.  It could take much longer in which case I have to establish a routine without the majority of a kitchen, a proper bed or a desk.  Not impossible, but I may have to change my routine a bit when I get my things.
